SS: We dig the bands name. What's the origin of it, and did you guys kick around allot of others before deciding on State Line Empire?
SLE: We kicked around a lot of names. Some were awful and others sounded cool but just didn't make sense. The "state line" in movies and stories has always been depicted as an area of lawlessness; A place where people run to evade the rules. Like this depiction, we write music by our rules and it is our empire.
SS: Who were the artists or bands from your past that you can say were instrumental in guiding the direction of your music?
SLE: Our musical tastes vary from member to member, but where we do meet in the middle, artists that come to mind are: Alice In Chains, Metallica, White Zombie, Stone Temple Pilots.
SS: How has your music evolved since you first began playing together?
SLE: It's constantly evolving as our experience as individuals, musicians and as a cohesive brotherhood grows. Everyone in the band is constantly trying to improve their respective craft and it is constantly leading us into new, dynamic areas.
SS: Can you give us some background on the members and how you guys hooked up?
SLE: Dave and I (Tyson) have been playing together for over a decade in a previous band. Soon after the breakup of that band, we formed State Line Empire with Cat and Jay who we were also working with for a few years and get along great with.
SS: What do you enjoy doing the most when you are not performing or working on your music?
SLE: I like to cook. It's kinda like songwriting in the fact that you don't know how it's gonna turn out until it's finished. I also enjoy traveling and going to the beach. I hate cold weather and if I had my way, I'd chase summer around the globe.
SS: You guys won Guitars Centers "Your Next Record With Slash." Congrats! What was it like working with Slash?
SLE: It was a surreal experience. First off, for a person who millions of folks around the world consider a living legend, he is quite humble and personable. When we were in the studio after he finished his recording, we all listened to the track together and he just looks at us and says something like "so, is that cool?" I'm thinking to myself "holy crap, that was amazing, play that shit again!!" but I was trying not to look like a weepy little girl and hold it together, so I emphatically said, "yes, it sounds great!"
SS: We are getting some really good feedback on your music. What is your favorite song to do live and why?
SLE: Since we have a lot of songs that have yet to be released, I'll pick one from the EP. Hands down, I'd have to say "Into Pieces" is my favorite to play live. It's an exciting song that really calls out for crowd participation. During that chorus, all I'm hearing is the crowd showing the "AYY" part. That pumps me up and makes me wanna throw that energy tenfold right back at them!
SS: We really appreciate you taking the time to answer our questions today. Finally, is there anything you'd like to say to your rapidly growing fan base?
SLE: Thank you for the amazing support! We will be releasing new music very soon so stay tuned.
